Ruby

Natalie, Rehema, and I were taken to a bathhouse, and given towels to wrap around us, while the guys were led to another.

I wasn’t sure if Queen Nuada had meant the water would be literally healing, but I was hoping that was the case. I couldn’t stop seeing Izadora’s face and red eyes. She’d only been gone for an hour. She’d told us that she wanted to visit her coven but promised to return soon.

She'd reassured me that Axel and I would be safe. But she hadn’t been safe. She never should have gone.

Closing my eyes, I tried to ground myself.

Watching Hekate grant Izadora a painless death reminded me of the moment Natalie had died on Earth. She'd been bitten by a vampire and was on the verge of transforming. I'd been the one to offer Natalie the coup de grace, so I knew what Hekate did hadn’t been easy.

“Wow,” Rehema gushed as she stepped inside, and I was brought back to reality.

The bathhouse was like a temple, I noticed. There were arched windows with stained glass depicting various colorful pictures, and the blue light coming in from outside added to the calming ambiance.

Vines were dangling from the ceiling, wrapping around pillars and covering the walls. And standing at the entrance, we found ourselves surrounded by water. Without waiting on the others, I dropped my towel and went in.

The water was warm and a soft golden color, and as I disrupted the calm surface, it glistened.

Before I even submerged myself completely, I felt its warmth seeping into my skin, and I closed my eyes and let myself go. My body immediately felt relaxed, and although my ache for Xavier wasn't gone, the pain was dulled considerably.

The water wasn't a cure for sadness, but it was helping.

I exhaled loudly, as if I hadn't been able to breathe in ages, and moved my arms around, floating.

"How is it?" Natalie asked from somewhere behind me.

I merely nodded, lost for words. If only Xavier were here to experience this, I thought … My fists clenched when I felt the tears coming. It was as if the water was pulling my emotions to the surface, forcing me to face them. But I didn't want to.

I'd cried so much already that I should be out of tears, but somehow, they kept coming. I was tired of it, but I couldn't help it, either. I couldn't help the ache in my heart because I’d lost Xavier, and now, I was losing other people I cared for, as well. It was just too much.

Axel and Izadora had been helping me. They’d been my sources of light in this realm, and even though there was a war going on beyond the castle walls and I was always worried about Natalie, I had managed to find a little peace.

In the short time we’d been together, Izadora had become a friend and a confidante. She’d listened while I talked about Xavier and offered me comfort when I cried.

And now, she was gone.
